“I realized I had inherited [my father’s] way of looking at things…”
When Stephanie Lamoline was cleaning out her late father’s house, she found a small box tucked away behind some office supplies. Inside she found 36 Polaroids her father had taken while working as an engineer at a construction site between 1996 and 2001. The creative and cathartic process that followed would lead to her first steps as an artist and the art book titled Quatre Mains / Zonder Handen, which acts as a visual dialogue as well as a post-mortem conversation with her father.
Stephanie compiled her stunning original photographs and texts and engaged us at Piknik to design the book, which is a limited edition and exhibited around the world. To reflect the dualistic nature of the communication contained within the pages, we created two distinct sections that together form a whole. Each page in one section therefore responds to another in the opposing section. The title of the work equally and poetically reflects the dichotomies that Stephanie contends with in her process of grief: Quatre mains refers to a duet performance on the piano, and Zonder handen means “without hands”. It was this poignant dynamic of exchange between the living and those who’ve passed on that we used as inspiration for the art object.
