ékla, the Wallonian Performing Arts Centre for Children and Young People, organizes the International Youth Audience Festival, Turbulences, every three years. This event is a testament to the center’s mission of bridging education and the arts. ékla is dedicated to offering performances for young audiences, hosting workshops, and supporting artist residencies in schools. It also serves as a valuable resource center, providing documentation on integrating arts into education.
In 2021, Piknik was invited to develop the visual identity for Turbulences, incorporating illustrations by guest artists Catherine Pineur and Émile Jadoul. The brief was clear: to create a campaign that would ignite curiosity, resonate with contemporary youth culture, and engage not only young audiences but also schools, teachers, and older family members.
With this in mind, we set out to craft a visual identity that was both unifying and playful, while embracing the spirit of disruption that the festival embodies. After all, Turbulences is about shaking things up! We designed a dynamic, adaptable font that responded to the words it formed, and a lively logo that appeared to dance on the page. A vibrant color palette added energy and character to the design.
Balancing creativity with clarity was key. While the visual system was bold and dynamic, each element—whether posters, leaflets, banners, festival signage, social media content, or the website—maintained readability through a cohesive layout and a clear hierarchy of information.
The campaign was a resounding success, and ékla has chosen to continue using this custom visual identity for future editions of the festival.
