Inspired by Sophie Daxhelet’s Une girafe sur le toit du monde “A Giraffe on the Roof of the World“, the French Language Department of the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles collaborated with a philologist and the educational staff of the French Language Directorate to create Viens écouter le monde “Let’s Listen to the World“, an educational tool designed to introduce children to linguistic diversity.

The handbook explores ten languages: Albanian, Arabic, Kinyarwanda, Lingala, Malinke, Mandarin, Pashto, Russian, Tigrinya, and Turkish. By playfully examining these alongside French, pupils gain new insights into their own communication systems while developing skills for foreign language acquisition. The tool also promotes interculturality in classrooms and emphasises the value of the home tongues of pupils whose primary language is not French.

We designed the entire teaching pack with readability and engagement in mind, using clear fonts and vibrant colours. We approached it with the duality of users in mind: keeping the tool practical for teachers, and engaging for kids. The pack includes a travel diary for pupils, featuring games, exercises, and listening activities; a teaching guide with detailed descriptions; and a card game to make learning interactive and fun.

Sophie Daxhelet’s cheerful giraffe appears throughout the materials in a series of line-drawn illustrations, encouraging pupils to explore and learn at every step and enjoy themselves too!
