Over two months, the Brussels Dance! Festival transforms the European capital into a vibrant center for contemporary dance. The international event features over 180 performances by emerging and renowned artists, along with more than 80 shows and conferences across two dozen cultural venues in and around Brussels. Driven by a coalition of 18 cultural operators, each edition is led by two key institutions. For the 7th edition, Contredanse and the Jacques Franck Cultural Center were in charge, and it was they who commissioned Piknik to develop a fresh visual identity for the festival.

As an archive and documentation center for dance, Contredanse wanted to highlight Belgium’s rich dance history. To support this vision, artist Lise Bruyneel was invited to create an open-air exhibition, displaying archival photos throughout the city. These images were printed on floating flags, transforming the urban landscape during the festival. Recognizing the importance of Bruyneel’s work, we ensured that all visual communication aligned with her exhibition. Our promotional materials—including posters, street banners, leaflets, website branding, video branding, and signage—were designed to engage in a visual dialogue with the exhibition, creating a cohesive and recognizable experience for audiences whether they were walking through the city, attending performances, or exploring the festival online.

Additionally, we crafted visual materials and communications around five key themes: Dance that Questions Us; Dance that Binds Us Together; Dance That Makes Us Laugh; Dance to Listen To; and Dance in All Shapes and Sizes. These themes were also incorporated into walkable tours, enriching the festival’s connection to the city.
