Legendary entities in the Brussels’ literary scene, À Livre Ouvert and Le Rat Conteur are two neighboring bookstores dedicated to general literature and children’s publications that function as one. Established in the 1970s, the store not only offers a wide range of activities (conferences, debates, workshops, readings) but is also active in defending local businesses and independent booksellers.
During the Covid crisis, the time had come for the store to create a common identity for the two brands, all the while remaining recognisable to their loyal customers and attracting a new audience.
We began a long and fruitful discussion with their team, which led to the creation of a new logo and a visual campaign based on illustrations that conveyed the shop’s core values. Combined with a plucky verbal identity developed in collaboration with Place Publique, we unfolded the branding on social media and networking websites at the height of the pandemic, while tangible merchandise and the shop’s façade were created in a second phase. The strong, vibrant identity of the bookshop is now recognisable from afar, positioning the store clearly as a large-scale spot where bookworms, curious kids, and literary lovers unite!
