Riggers

In circus schools around the world, riggers, the technicians responsible for ensuring the safety of performers and the stability of installations, often work far from the spotlight. Yet their role is essential: without them, no aerial work, no flight, no performance. In 2022, FEDEC (European Federation of Professional Circus Schools) conducted a large-scale survey among its members to better understand the realities, needs, and practices of these professionals.

From this research emerged RIGGERS, a European project aiming to build a supportive community of riggers, encourage knowledge exchange, and strengthen the recognition of their profession within contemporary circus.

To bring these findings to life and pay tribute to these behind-the-scenes roles, we developed in collaboration with FEDEC a multi-format campaign. Each visual features mascots symbolising the qualities of a rigger: vigilance, precision, flexibility, and strength. These animal figures bring a sense of imagination and universality while reflecting the collective and interconnected nature of the project. The posters express the tension between invisibility and visibility, between technical rigor and creativity. Designed within FEDEC’s visual identity system, the campaign adopts a tone that is both informative and playful, raising awareness of safety culture while sparking public curiosity.

By making visible those who ensure performers’ safety every day, RIGGERS turns design into a space for recognition and transmission. A visual tribute to those who work in the shadows so that others may rise.

In circus schools, riggers, technicians responsible for the safety of performers and the stability of installations, often work behind the scenes. In 2022, FEDEC (European Federation of Professional Circus Schools) conducted a European survey to better understand their realities and strengthen their recognition. From this study emerged RIGGERS, a collaborative project aimed at bringing these professionals together and highlighting their essential role in contemporary circus.

To share the results of this research, we developed with FEDEC a campaign celebrating the world of rigging through mascots, powerful, agile, and attentive, symbols of the project’s diversity and collective spirit. These hybrid figures, both poetic and expressive, reflect the beauty and complexity of a profession built on balance, trust, and precision.

Here, graphic design becomes a tool for recognition: clear compositions, inclusive typography, and a tone that is both informative and playful. Faithful to FEDEC’s visual identity, the campaign highlights those who, far from the spotlight, make every flight possible. With RIGGERS, design connects cables, schools, and communities, a thread stretched between art and technique, between invisibility and recognition.
