“For the students, by the students”. That was Amandine Degand’s overarching ask as a professor at IHECS journalism academy upon launching their new online media, Mammouth. We were approached to bring this ambitious project to life, creating both a visual identity and a functional online platform for sharing articles, videos, podcasts, and images provided by the students.
With ideas of empowerment, ownership and belonging in mind, we proposed a minimalistic, impactful visual identity that the undergraduates could make their own. The name is a humoristic double take on the traditional press being seen as “old school” or even prehistoric, while the young students and their first attempts at journalistic writing might be “clumsy like an elephant in a china shop”, says Amandine.

So, combined with an iconoclastic logotype featuring a stylized hairy mammoth, the entire design system reflects the disruptive yet coherent editorial line of the student magazine. Piknik also paid particular attention to the website’s functionality and ergonomics, offering three distinct sections (read, look, listen), as well as a clear display of metadata and sharing options. Since its launch in 2019, Mammouth has continued to evolve. The media is now present as an annual event where various guest speakers including journalists, experts, lecturers, and artists come together to tackle pressing issues alongside IHECS students and the general public.
