“Hello, I’m calling to ask whether I can follow a Master’s program to become a clairvoyant at your school?”
This is just one of the many gems collected by Eveline Beautemps during her time as a receptionist at IHECS, the Brussels Institute for Advanced Studies in Social Communications. Over the years, she has compiled a treasure trove of amusing, bizarre, and absurd exchanges with students, parents, strangers, and colleagues. These anecdotes, each more unexpected than the last, are now immortalised in her book, “Les perles”.
The project is a tribute to the lively, unpredictable rhythm of life at an institution dedicated to teaching communication—where, ironically, miscommunication takes centre stage. The book celebrates these surreal moments and highlights the human quirks that make them unforgettable.
We were honoured to design the book’s layout and oversee its print production, especially having known Eveline personally while either studying or teaching at IHECS. We envisioned it as a small, elegant volume—a “precious pearl” itself. The high-quality paper, embossed pearlescent ink for the illustration and title, and meticulous design evoke the charm of a poetry collection. Each anecdote is given its own page, inviting readers to dip in at random and uncover nuggets of humourous wisdom or absurdity.
To add to its quirky charm, Eveline dedicated “Les perles” to Denise, her beloved pet chicken and companion, who sadly passed away just before the book’s release in 2022.
In 2022, we were commissioned to design the layout and manage the production of “Les Perles”, a collection of humorous and surreal anecdotes gathered by Eveline Beautemps, receptionist at IHECS. Our goal was to create a small, refined volume reminiscent of a “precious pearl.” The publication features high-quality paper, embossed pearlescent ink for the cover illustration and title, and a minimal, poetic layout that gives each anecdote its own page. This design invites readers to open the book at random and discover a nugget of humour or absurdity. The final result is a thoughtful, elegant publication reflecting the charm and wit of its content.
